• The Akan of Ghana: Aspects of Past and Present Practices

    The Akan of Ghana: Aspects of Past and Present Practices takes the reader through the ancestry of present-day Akan people – from the influence of ancient Egypt, through the ancient Empires of Western Sudan and into the forest belt of present-day Ghana. Comparative analysis of cultural practices (such as kingship and the royal setup, death, funeral rites, and family structures) between ancient Egypt and present-day Akan people are highlighted. The three elements that make up an Akan person – Blood, Soul, and Spirit – as well as the Akan family structure are elaborately treated, and a clear cultural distinction between an Akan family and clan is explained. Names and their appellations, signs and symbols, as well as some kente designs are highlighted in the appendices. Ultimately, cultural challenges of the Akan in the contemporary world are brought to the fore.

  • Akan Kasadwini (Akan Oral Literature)

    The book is a pioneering work of Akan oral literature written in the Akan language. It gives a theoretical view of oral literature and a detailed account of the major genres of oral literature in Akan. It deals with an introduction to literature and some aspects of stylistics. It ushers students of literature into some of the crucial issues of literature. The book deals with what literature is, and what it can afford to individuals and the society as a whole. It considers literature as an indispensable aspect of any society’s life. It also identifies the main characteristics of literature with specific reference to oral literature.

    The book treats some of the major terms in literature and supports them with examples. The book has 25 chapters and each chapter addresses, performance, composition, structure, functions and literary devices. Each chapter ends with sample questions that will help students to revise what they have learned from the chapter.

    The book is in response to the needs of students at the WASSCE, Diploma and Degree levels to the subject matter of oral literature in Akan. This book will also help Training College students both in their course work at college and also in their teaching.

  • The Akans of Ghana: Their Customs, History and Institutions

    Supremacist historians have tended to give slanting presentations to African history as mere accounts of conflicts and wars between tribes.

    The author, deploring the situation – and agreeing with the African proverb that “until lions have their own historians, tales of hunting will always glorify the hunter” – embarked on the work of the role of the African Historian.

    In this book he provides basic background information about Ghana in the first chapters and utilizes the remaining to:

    The “Thumb Prints” is a historical fiction novel, and as such, it is based on two important events in history: the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and the Fante-Asante wars (Fante and Asante are tribes that form part of modern-day Ghana, West Africa). These two events are prominent in the history of Ghana, with the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade being prominent in world history.

    The purpose of this book is to provide a good read for readers, and not to incite any resentment towards any group of people or race.

  • A Comprehensive Course in Twi (Asante)

    Asante Twi is the most widely spoken of the dialects of the Akan language. Akan is spoken by about 44 percent of Ghana’s population as a first language, and is also used as a second language by a large number of the remainder. This book is meant to introduce a non-Twi beginner to the spoken language.

    It may also be used by those who have some knowledge of the language, but who want to improve their competence in it, and also has a considerable English-Twi vocabulary.     Professor Florence Abena Dolphyne taught in the Department of Linguistics in the University of Ghana from 1965-2001. She has published several books, including The Akan (Twi-Fante) language: Its Sound Systems and Tonal Structure, A Course in Oral English and the accompanying Teachers’ Handbook, and the best-selling Emancipation of Women: An African Perspective.

  • Adze Fi Hamu (Mfantse)

    Egya Tsinyinarannsɛ advised his two children, Onuaye and Fakyɛm to take to farming after completing their elementary education. The former obeyed their father’s advice but the latter refused to do farming and decided to go to Accra to look for a white-collar job.
