The Pelican Brief
₵50.00
In suburban Georgetown, a killer’s Reeboks whisper on the floor of a posh home. In a seedy D.C. porno house, a patron is swiftly garroted to death. The next day America learns that two of its Supreme Court justices have been assassinated. And in New Orleans, a young law student prepares a legal brief.
To Darby Shaw it was no more than a legal shot in the dark, a brilliant guess. To the Washington establishment it’s political dynamite. Suddenly Darby is witness to a murder–a murder intended for her. Going underground, she finds that there is only one person–an ambitious reporter after a newsbreak hotter than Watergate–she can trust to help her piece together the deadly puzzle. Somewhere between the bayous of Louisiana and the White House’s inner sanctums, a violent cover-up is being engineered. For someone has read Darby’s brief–someone who will stop at nothing to destroy the evidence of an unthinkable crime.

#OverallImpressions: what a thrilling read! I started less than 48 hours ago and couldn’t put it down. Read every chance I got. John Grisham is such an expert writer for legal thrillers. The plot was intriguing though as someone who’s read his work before, I figured out his angle quite early in the work and found I wasn’t far off by the end. This isn’t a bad thing because it doesn’t detract from the thrilling reading experience regardless. I love how he writes the story as though it’s a movie playing out scene by scene. I’m not surprised his works get adapted by Hollywood for the big screen. I’ll be watching the movie version for the first time when I get home later tonight. I also love that he really knows his stuff as a lawyer and works that in quite nicely without overbearing readers with boring legal knowledge. He also manages to both humanize (in terms of flaws and struggles) and give reverence to those in the legal profession. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable read with interesting and sharp characters.
#SomethingThatStoodOut: Grisham’s angle as an environmentalist bent on taking down the bad guys (big corporations). I believe this is the second book I’m reading by him with such environmental consciousness. Also, the book came with a detachable book mark found on the back cover. I couldn’t contain my giddiness when I saw this and wonder why most books aren’t printed this way.

Recommend or nah: I absolutely recommend. It’s a fun and exciting read.
