Korkoli lost his parents in a flood. He has lost his friends and is lonely, and he no longer has food to eat because the environment no longer supports the life of the tiny insects and worms that he feeds on. Philosophy, Culture and Vision: African Perspectives
Believing that the intellectual enterprise called philosophy is essentially a part of the cultural as well as historical experience of a people, that the concepts and problems that occupy the attention of philosophers placed in different cultural spaces or historical times generally derive directly from those spaces and times, and that philosophy, in turn, has been most relevant to the development of human cultures, the Ghanaian philosopher Kwame Gyekye gives reflective attention in this book to some of the concepts and problems that in his view feature most prominently in the contemporary African cultural, social, political, and moral experience. Such concepts and problems include the following: political legitimacy, development, culture and the pursuit of science and technology, political corruption, democracy, representation and the politics of inclusion, the status of cultural values in national orientation, understanding globalization, and others. It is these topics that are covered in the essays collected in this book.
The unrelenting pursuit of the speculative activity by the philosopher in most cases eventuates in normative proposals; these normative proposals often embody a vision-a vision of an ideal human society in terms of its values, politics, and culture. Vision, understood here, has human-not supernatural or divine-origination and involvement and requires action by human beings in order for it to come into reality. A vision may derive from sustained critical evaluation of a culture or some elements of it. Gyekye attempts an articulation of the visions of the essays contained in the book.
Even though philosophical ideas and concerns are originally inspired by and worked out in a cultural milieu, it does not necessarily follow, Gyekye strongly believes, that the relevance of those ideas and insights is to be tetheed to the cultures that produced them. For, more often than not, the relevance of those ideas, or at least some of them, transcends the confines of their own times and cultures and can be appreciated by other societies, or cultures, or generational epochs. This trans-cultural or trans-epochal or meta-contextual appeal or attraction of philosophical ideas and insights spawned by a particular culture or cluster of cultures or in specific historical times is to be put down to our common human nature-including our basic human desires and aspirations. Thus, most of the essays published here should be of interest to the global community-i.e., to cultures and societies beyond the African.

Ghana Energy Law and Policy: Electricity (Hardcover)
Electricity is an essential commodity for modern life, and Ghana is no exception. The country’s economy, social well-being, and development rely heavily on the availability and accessibility of electricity. However, despite significant strides made in the electricity sector, Ghana still faces several challenges, including inadequate supply, high tariffs, and inefficient distribution.
Electricity law and policy play a crucial role in addressing these challenges and ensuring the sustainable development of the sector. Understanding the legal and regulatory framework governing electricity in Ghana is vital for stakeholders in the sector, including policymakers, regulators, investors, and consumers.
This book aims to provide a comprehensive overview of energy law and policy in Ghana with an emphasis on electricity. It covers various aspects of the electricity sector, including generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption. It also examines the role of regulatory bodies, such as the Energy Commission, in regulating the sector.
The book features contributions from experts in the field of electricity law and policy in Ghana, offering a diverse range of perspectives on the sector. It is intended to serve as a reference guide for stakeholders in the electricity sector, as well as researchers, academics, and students interested in energy policy and regulation.
As Ghana continues to pursue its development agenda, the electricity sector will remain a crucial component of its economic and social development. This book aims to contribute to the ongoing discourse on electricity law and policy in Ghana and, ultimately, to the sector’s sustainable development.

Petroleum and Energy Management Sourcebook (Hardcover)
The petroleum industry is unique and complex. It requires massive investments, long lead times and great perseverance and tact. This book, Petroleum and Energy Management Sourcebook provides comprehensive source material with introductory content and detailed analysis of key concepts and fundamental principles for understanding operations and transactions of the petroleum and energy sectors. The simplified explanations and examples given make it easy to understand.
The sector thrives on stable sources of financing, robust regulatory and fiscal regimes and a skilled workforce. Risk, in all its forms, is a central theme in the sector. It is essential to understand the concept of risks and how tools such as the fiscal regime and regulations can be deployed to deal with them.
This book identifies and provides a simplified explanation of complex issues. It is a good source of literature for those who want to understand the petroleum and energy sectors, those who work in the industry and those who aspire to be part of it.
As a result of the complexity of the petroleum and energy sectors, the book is divided into two parts: Part One deals with the petroleum sector value chain analysis from upstream exploration and production to crude refinery economics and consumption to petroleum trading and risk management. Part Two focuses on energy project financing, development, electricity industry value chain analysis, renewable energy, environment and sustainability.

Central Banking in Ghana and the Governors: Institutional Growth and Economic Development (Hardcover)
A charge of chariots of fire, this is not just a book about the financial history of Ghana in spite of its formative challenges but a centenary work of West Africa – regional monetary evolution and global multilateralism. For devout bankers, intelligentsia, historians and aspirants, this is the one. Elegantly written, it establishes Agyeman-Duah as an unavoidable historian of the Bank of Ghana. — Jewel Howard-Taylor, Vice-President of the Republic of Liberia
The Bank of Ghana is technically a better institution than it was thirty years ago. Even governments are less inclined towards interventions in its work. It is different from other captured public institutions where economic decision-making is with a political lens. — Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana and Co-editor of The Economy of Ghana-Analytical Perspectives on Stability, Growth and Poverty
The Bank of Ghana is leading central banks in the sub-region with regards to the use of technology in the finance service industry … countries in Africa are now learning from Ghana’s digital payment regulations. — Mohammed Sanusi Lamido, Former Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria and the 14th Emir of Kano
Ghana has in recent years been one of Africa’s more successful economies – from its colonial journey through Heavily Indebted Poor Country (HIPC) to stable modern democracy. Agyeman-Duah has a sound appreciation of the difficulties of transforming a producer of commodities of raw materials into a prosperous mixed economy. Now an oil economy, the test ahead is, will Ghana at last be able to control its own economic destiny; free of obligations to donors and the storms from world commodity markets? — Frances Cairncross, Rector Emeritus, Exeter College, University of Oxford and Former Managing Editor, The Economist

Social Structure of Ghana: A Study in Persistence and Change
When Social Structure of Ghana was first published in 1981, it became the only comprehensive and sociological attempts to examine the institutional framework of the entire Ghanaian society. It still is. In this 1999 edition, the author updates most of the data on Ghana, and analyses in greater detail some of the issues raised therein. These issues include the military in politics, religious sectarianism, social problems, educational reforms and the world of work, and the shifting loyalties of Ghanaians to kin groups, tribes and the nation.
As the twentieth century comes to a close, this book probably represents the last major publication on Ghana that analyses the country’s human and material resources for confronting the challenges of the next century.
The book will continue to be useful for studies in sociology, ethnography, political science, African studies, medical sociology value systems, nursing and social work.

Ghana’s Employment Challenges (Proceedings, 2001)
Proceedings, Founder’s Week Celebrations, November 2001.
Effective tackling of Ghana’s alarming unemployment challenges has eluded governments to-date. Possible strategies for it continue to be debated in national discourse. Colossal youth unemployment and its general grave consequences for society at large and for the affected individuals remain a major concern. As recently witnessed in North Africa, governments ignore the challenge at their own peril.
This volume brings together papers, which were presented and examined at length at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences’ 2011 Founder’s Week Celebration. The papers provide insights and a sound basis for planning comprehensively to address the diverse features of the issue.
