Abusua Pa Jigsaw Puzzle: Elmina Castle (140/216 Puzzle Pieces) – Pre-Order

Elmina Castle, also known as St. George’s Castle, is a historic fortress located in the town of Elmina in the Central Region of Ghana. It was built by the Portuguese in 1482 and is recognized as the oldest European-built structure in sub-Saharan Africa.

The castle was originally constructed as a trading post for the Portuguese to establish and maintain their presence in the region. It served as a major hub for the transatlantic slave trade, with thousands of enslaved Africans passing through its doors on their way to the Americas.

Elmina Castle played a significant role in the colonial history of Ghana. It changed hands several times, with the Dutch capturing it from the Portuguese in 1637, and later the British taking control in 1872.

Today, Elmina Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a powerful symbol of the transatlantic slave trade. It attracts visitors from around the world who come to explore its dungeons, learn about its history, and reflect on the profound impact of slavery on Africa and the African diaspora. Guided tours are available to provide insights into the castle’s dark past and the harsh realities faced by those who were held captive within its walls.

  • Africa: Poverty in the Midst of Plenty

This book posits that human beings are the most deceitful, dissimulator and complex creatures on earth. It is a critique of human behaviour, especially the African, and how he/she may be held responsible for his/her own under-development.

The book also contains some analysis on the West African socio -politico-economic realities to enable us to appraise the sources of imbalance in development between the North and the South and the fact that Africans cannot continue to blame colonialism and neo-colonialism for the uneven development. The solution is at our own doorstep.

The narratives are done independently but, put together, it is a labyrinth of the nature of the African and Africa. A must read for policy-makers, diplomats and students of Africa political economy.

  • Who am I? Exploring the Concepts of Gender and Identity from the Frafra Perspective

In a world where many seem unsure of who they are, the concepts of gender and identity are prime for discussion. Yet through my years of study of the subject of identity, I have come to realise the definition of identity is so vague it can pass for whatever you wish it to be. If anything, it has become more difficult for people to define themselves, making it look as though the customary (re)sources for and of identity formation are no longer as direct or straightforward as before, particularly in the face of globalisation and modernisation, or identity has become self mutating. So, I ask, how can we easily describe who we are and more importantly, how can we defend that understanding?

Perhaps a cultural perspective to the concepts could offer more insights. In this book, I adopt a culturally contextual framework of description to gender and identity as it relates to the Frafras of Northern Ghana.

  • Key Banks in Ghana + Telcos + Accounting Firms

The book is a treasure trove of photographs of the most iconic buildings which embellish the skyline of Accra. In this book, Mr. Wilfred Kojo Ephraim, the author and photographer, takes us on a pictorial tour of the capital. With brief touch downs in Abelemkpe and on Ring Road Central, he leads us from Airport City through Cantonment City down the length and breadth of Independence Avenue, to the Central Business District of Accra.

The book is a one stop shop, the first of its kind to assemble information on the Headquarters Buildings, Visions, Missions, Values, and provide a cursory look at Financial Performances about the major banks, telcos, and accounting firms operating in Ghana. One can browse through and favourably compare the Ghana Commercial Bank Head Office building which was completed in the sixties/seventies, to the more contemporary Standard Chartered Bank building at 87 Independence Avenue or the Ultramodern EY and PWC buildings in Cantonment City.

This book is for all who appreciate Accra, or who plan to visit the city.  It is for children learning about the capital of Ghana, as well as for adults who know it well.  It is a memento of the city and belongs on everyone’s bookshelf!
