• The Matriarch’s Verse

I am a mongrel; a mixed breed of Ga, Ewe, Akuapem, English, Middle-Eastern and American cultures; I am a Third Culture Kid.

Apiorkor’s socio-cultural experiences are interesting and might appear to be unique. But the truth is that there are several other Ghanaians who are secret sharers of her life. Such people lack access to platforms that would allow them to tell their collective story, so that their societies and communities can re-think all of the things that affect them.

Happily, Apiorkor is an artist over matter and over emotions. She possesses a mastery over words and over the essences of life. Many Ghanaian men, women and children are like her.

And her voice represents their voices.

In this sensational collection, The Matriarch seeks to celebrate, shock, tickle, challenge and highlight our Ghanaian-ness in the 21st Century. The author peppers our imagination with the following:

What does it mean to be Ghanaian?

    How have we progressed?

Why do we stand for the things we stand for?

Who really is the modern Ghanaian woman?

Where is the global place for the urban Ghanaian space?

  • HAIKU Rhapsodies (Verses from Ghana)

Haiku as a genre is less known on the Ghanaian literary landscape. Against this background, the publication of Haiku Rhapsodies (verses from Ghana) by Celestine Nudanu is very timely and historic. Haiku Rhapsodies explores a field where no Ghanaian poet has ever published in hard print. Hence Celestine Nudanu’s work distinguishes her as a trailblazer among her contemporaries. And, most notably, Haiku Rhapsodies comes in at the opportune time to answer the world call for Haiku to be added to UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Haiku Rhapsodies is a finely structured book arranged under the following themes; Afriku, Nature, Haiku My Heart, the Divine and Death. Through these themes, Celestine Nudanu succeeds in transporting the reader into her world by creating animated, serene and yet powerful scenes. At the same time, the poet draws the reader into the complex yet fascinating phenomena of what life is all about; Love, Death, Spirituality and Life itself. The beauty lies in her skill of brevity as a haiku poet. She writes with elegance, using few words which like magic are enchanting, leaving the reader exhilarated and wanting more.

  • The Other Side: The Poetry of Nana Dadzie Ghansah

From a place where the everyday is captured in the beauty of rhymes and cascading phrases, the poet explores the issues of love, life, identity and death. This is also a journey into a newly discovered world of what is possible. In measured yet bold steps, the poet immerses himself into the rhythmic intricacies of this discovery. He calls this place “The Other Side” and he seeks to express the vastness of this experience through his poems.
  • The Poetry of Ephraim Amu (Ephraim Amu Memorial Lecture, #6)

Lecture delivered by Professor L.A. Boadi in May, 2004.

Dr Amu has been known for his musical compositions and experimentations in musical styles, and a lot has been written about this aspect of his work. But, apart from cursory references made by Professor Nketia and Professor Agawu about him as a poet, there hasn’t been much discussion on his Akan lyrics from the point of view of literature. Professor Boadi examines three of Amu’s poems (in Twi) in detail in this paper.

The analysis of the form and depth of meaning in each of the lines and the words used make for very interesting reading.

  • I Rise to Inspire

I Rise to Inspire is a collection of poems that focus on themes related to love, marriage, perseverance, faith, and friendship.

I Rise to Inspire will challenge you to persevere in your daily struggles, it will sooth and uplift you, bring a smile to your face and ignite hope in you daily. It is your story, my story our song and our Journey.

The poems on perseverance convict readers that there is a staying power in every soul. Readers are, therefore, encouraged not to be content with mediocrity but to strive hard and transcend every negative situation that comes their way. Furthermore, men, women and children are called on to discover their unique potentials and roles in society and are inspired to answer to the call of duty in society when called on. Readers are also impressed on to love unconditionally and forgive.

  • Whispers of Dawn: A Book of Cherita

With Whispers of Dawn, A Book of Cherita, Celestine Nudanu lights up the torch for Africa as the first practitioner of the minimalist poetry form, the Cherita (a Malay word for story or tale created by ai li in 1997). The first ever Cherita collection to be published in Africa, Whispers of Dawn recounts Celestine’s personal story with sublime honesty, baring leaf by leaf, her disappointments, wishes, dreams etc. and boldly spilling out love betrayed and dreams deferred, often revealing to bare bones moments and situations where others would prefer to camouflage. Celestine writes with grace and exceptional poignancy, allowing the reader to ponder over her words and reflect on her story long after the pages have been closed on this collection.

Please listen to her and you will never be the same again.
