  • Lover of Her Sole: A West African Cinderella Story

Agyapomaa Agyemang is a woman on the cusp of success. With a thriving business in Ibadan and an adoring fiancé by her side, she’s living the fairytale she had always hoped for. Her charmed life seems certain and sure, until her fantasy is taken apart brick-by-brick by hatred and betrayal.

Wounded, she returns to Kumasi to heal and seek solace in her family. What Pomaa finds instead is wahala: phantoms from her past, a madman chasing her through the streets, and the steadfast adulation of Akoto – a shoemaker whose affections leave her confounded. Suddenly, she’s confronted with a new set of choices she never counted on.

Resolving her circumstances might be easier if not for her best friend, Frema, and her constant reminders about ‘Ashanti Aristocrat’ codes and expectations. Pomaa must decide if she’s bold enough to reciprocate Akoto’s affection, or remain content to settle with what is familiar and acceptable. Can Pomaa still choose her prince, knowing that he’s a pauper?

  • Freshwater

An extraordinary debut novel, Freshwater explores the surreal experience of having a fractured self. It centers around a young Nigerian woman, Ada, who develops separate selves within her as a result of being born “with one foot on the other side.” Unsettling, heartwrenching, dark, and powerful, Freshwater is a sharp evocation of a rare way of experiencing the world, one that illuminates how we all construct our identities.

Ada has always been unusual. As an infant in southern Nigeria, she is a source of deep concern to her family. Her parents successfully prayed her into existence, but she becomes a troubled child, prone to violent fits of anger and grief, developing separate selves within her. Ada is more than just volatile – she is an ogbanje, born “with one foot on the other side.” When Ada travels to America for college, a traumatic event crystallizes her selves into something more powerful.

Based in the author’s realities and narrated by these selves, Freshwater maps how Ada’s life spirals in a dangerous direction as her alters – now protective, now hedonistic – move into control.

Freshwater dazzles with ferocious energy and serpentine grace, heralding the arrival of a fierce new literary voice.

  • Coast of Slaves

This is the first volume in Hansen’s classic slave trade trilogy. When America was discovered and plantations established, slave labour became the principal export commodity from the Gold Coast. This book is about the history of Danish/Norwegian participation in the trans- Atlantic slave trade. It describes the organisation of the trade, the participants, the challenge, and the link with the West Indies to where the slaves were transported for work on the sugar plantations. It describes Danish purchase of islands in the West Indies, and traces how the decline in Dutch and British trade, and the abilities of the Danish administration led to a golden age in the Danish slave trade in the 1770s and 1780s. In that period, the Danish share in the total slave trade exceeded ten percent; and the decline in the trade with the growth of a new European consciousness, heralded abolition.

Coast of Slaves, the first volume of the trilogy, was originally published in Danish in 1967. This English translation is edited to provide explanations about inaccessible references as well as established factual misrepresentations.

The unquenchable desire of every young Ghanaian man is to have regular delicious sex and to get a visa to a European or North American country. He would pray fervently to God so long as He owes him his wants. But if enemy spirits, like a dictatorial father, deny him the chance to leave Ghana, he would stay, fleece the country, have more sex, and watch European football. For these desires, he’d make a fetish of the church or the mosque. Joseph Adenera Akolgo was one such young man.
