Dictionary of the Hausa People: Volume 2 – English-Hausa (Cambridge Library Collection)
Hausa is an African language originating in Niger and northern Nigeria and spoken widely in West and Central Africa as a lingua franca. Charles Henry Robinson (1861-1925) was the first student of the short-lived Hausa Association, formed in 1891 to promote the study of the Hausa Language and people. The Association sponsored Robinson to stay in Northern Nigeria from 1894 to 1895 to gain more experience in the language. On his return Robinson published an anthology of Hausa text in 1896 and a Hausa grammar in 1897 as well as his two-volume dictionary in 1899. His efforts contributed greatly to Western knowledge of the language despite criticisms of his relatively short experience of Hausa-speaking communities.
Volume 2 is an English-Hausa dictionary, intended for those who wished to speak colloquial Hausa. The version reissued here is the 1925 fourth edition.

Twi Kasa Mmara: A Twi Grammar
A classic. First published in 1938
CHRISTALLER’S Twi Grammar has long been out of print. Teachers and students of the language have always felt the need of a Grammar written in Twi, and this book is an attempt to supply that need. Much of the material in this book has been based on the works of H. N. Riis and J. G. Christaller.
The introduction deals with the structure of the language and phonetics. The book is then divided into four parts; the first is a general introduction to the parts of speech, the second and third are more detailed study, and the fourth contains syntax. There are a number of appendices dealing with the classification of nouns, paradigms, punctuation, and specimen analyses. Some exercises have been included at the end of some topics to reinforce what has been discussed.
The book is published with the approval of the Education Department and it is meant to be used as a teacher’s handbook in Twi-speaking Primary schools, Junior Schools and as a pupil’s book in Senior High Schools, Training Colleges and Secondary Schools.

Nimako, the main character in the story, disregards all tradition and marries Nsonowaa, in church, rejecting his parents’ preference for Sɛɛwaa. For a time, things seem to go well. Then it happens: Nimako gets into heavy debt as a result of their showy and expensive wedding and, harassed by creditors, is forced to move to Accra.
But things take a worse turn: Nimako’s wife finds a new lover in Mr. Boadi resulting in the breakup of her marriage with Nimako.
Back home, Sɛɛwaa is married to Mr. Yaamoa, a prosperous farmer. Harsh realities force Nimako to return to Dwenase, his hometown. Nimako uses his experience and initiative to mobilise the villagers to better their standard of living and thereby wins the respect of all. Nimako comes round to respect the tradition of his people and, with his parents’ blessing, is customarily married to the now-divorced Sɛɛwaa. They then live happily ever after.
