  • The Matriarch’s Verse

    I am a mongrel; a mixed breed of Ga, Ewe, Akuapem, English, Middle-Eastern and American cultures; I am a Third Culture Kid.

    Apiorkor’s socio-cultural experiences are interesting and might appear to be unique. But the truth is that there are several other Ghanaians who are secret sharers of her life. Such people lack access to platforms that would allow them to tell their collective story, so that their societies and communities can re-think all of the things that affect them.

    Happily, Apiorkor is an artist over matter and over emotions. She possesses a mastery over words and over the essences of life. Many Ghanaian men, women and children are like her.

    And her voice represents their voices.

    In this sensational collection, The Matriarch seeks to celebrate, shock, tickle, challenge and highlight our Ghanaian-ness in the 21st Century. The author peppers our imagination with the following:

  • Sɛ Ɛbɛwie (Asante Twi)

    Sɛ Ɛbɛwie is a tragi-comic novel which describes how a boy called Ntensere set off to trace his father called Bɛyɛɛdɛn. Bɛyɛɛdɛn had long traveled to an unknown destination in his youthful days. The journeys which Ntensere made to trace his father were full of adventures. At last he found him. They both took to farming. In the course of farming, they luckily dug out a big fortune. After this, they happily returned to their own Pɛwohoyɛsu. There, they did not only live a fulfilled life, but they also gave part of their wealth to help the underprivileged and also to develop their village. Consequently, their village became one of the well established towns in that area.

  • Spring Field

    I remember with sufficient clarity where I first gave birth to my first poem. It was in high school. However, what was planted as a small seed of self-expression would grow and be transformed into a field of different shades of my life’s experiences: both sweet and vinegary.

    As you read, you will become a witness to clear demonstrations of novice attempts, which metamorphose into signs of matured expressions and an unmistakable gentle growth of a pure love for poetry. My love for poetry always kept the wick burning to continually express passions and experiences aesthetically.

    Nevertheless, while some of my poems are simply the result of my imagination, there are some that are wrapped around the lives of other people. Today, what you hold in your hands is a testament of a journey of survival and the will to keep on moving.

    Dr Amu has been known for his musical compositions and experimentations in musical styles, and a lot has been written about this aspect of his work. But, apart from cursory references made by Professor Nketia and Professor Agawu about him as a poet, there hasn’t been much discussion on his Akan lyrics from the point of view of literature. Professor Boadi examines three of Amu’s poems (in Twi) in detail in this paper.

    The analysis of the form and depth of meaning in each of the lines and the words used make for very interesting reading.
